The time is now! With you and the LEAD, the possibilities are limitless. There are a few parts of the build video that could be clearer but overall It was easy to follow along and get this machine built. There were a number of parts missing, and one of my limit switches was faulty with my machine. Great machine for beginners, nice and rigid and the open builds software is easy to use, although I have quickly upgraded to a more fully featured control software.
Recommended for anyone looking to they into CNC. Comparing my experience with the Lead Machine and the KickStarter I can simply say Openbuilds has done a masterful job.
With my previous machine I spent days putting it together and weeks getting the electronics and control board working. I had the Lead Machine up and working in a day. The Blackbox controller makes it so easy and the PowerCase eliminates any worry about getting the power right.
The engineering is spot on and the build video makes it easy for anyone to put the machine together. I would recommend this anyone from beginner to expert.

The controller is written in highly optimized C utilizing every clever feature of the AVR-chips to achieve precise timing and asynchronous operation. It is able to maintain up to 30kHz of stable, jitter free control pulses. It accepts standards-compliant g-code and has been tested with the output of several CAM tools with no problems.
Arcs, circles and helical motion are fully supported, as well as, all other primary g-code commands. Macro functions, variables, and most canned cycles are not supported, but we think GUIs can do a much better job at translating them into straight g-code anyhow. Grbl includes full acceleration management with look ahead. That means the controller will look up to 16 motions into the future and plan its velocities ahead to deliver smooth acceleration and jerk-free cornering.

This awesome new feature is common only on industrial machines, often used to optimize speeds and feeds while a job is running. Most hobby CNC's try to mimic this behavior, but usually have large amounts of lag. Grbl executes overrides in realtime and within tens of milliseconds.
Jogging Mode : The new jogging commands are independent of the g-code parser, so that the parser state doesn't get altered and cause a potential crash if not restored properly. Documentation is included on how this works and how it can be used to control your machine via a joystick or rotary dial with a low-latency, satisfying response. Laser Mode : The new "laser" mode will cause Grbl to move continuously through consecutive G1, G2, and G3 commands with spindle speed changes.
When "laser" mode is disabled, Grbl will instead come to a stop to ensure a spindle comes up to speed properly. Spindle speed overrides also work with laser mode so you can tweak the laser power, if you need to during the job. This will disable everything, including the stepper drivers.
Nice to have when you are leaving your machine unattended and want to power down everything automatically. Only a reset exits the sleep state. A CNC machine processes a piece of material metal, plastic, wood, ceramic, or composite to meet specifications by following a coded programmed instruction and without a manual operator.
A CNC machine is a motorized maneuverable tool and often a motorized maneuverable platform, which are both controlled by a computer, according to specific input instructions.
Instructions are delivered to a CNC machine in the form of a sequential program of machine control instructions such as G-code and M-codethen executed. The program can be written by a person or, far more often, generated by graphical computer-aided design CAD software. In the case of 3D printers, the part to be printed is "sliced", before the instructions or the program is generated.
CNC is a vast improvement over non-computerized machining that must be manually controlled e. In modern CNC systems, the design of a mechanical part and its manufacturing program is highly automated. The part's mechanical dimensions are defined using CAD software and then translated into manufacturing directives by computer-aided manufacturing CAM software. The resulting directives are transformed by " post processor " software into the specific commands necessary for a particular machine to produce the component, and then are loaded into the CNC machine.
Since any particular component might require the use of a number of different tools — drillssawsetc. In other installations, a number of different machines are used with an external controller and human or robotic operators that move the component from machine to machine. In either case, the series of steps needed to produce any part is highly automated and produces a part that closely matches the original CAD.
The first NC machines were built in the s and s, based on existing tools that were modified with motors that moved the tool or part to follow points fed into the system on punched tape. Those early servomechanisms were rapidly augmented with analog and digital computers, creating the modern CNC machine tools that have revolutionized machining processes. Motion is controlling multiple axes, normally at least two X and Y and a tool spindle that moves in the Z depth.
The position of the tool is driven by direct-drive stepper motors or servo motors in order to provide highly accurate movements, or in older designs, motors through a series of step-down gears. Open-loop control works as long as the forces are kept small enough and speeds are not too great.
On commercial metalworking machines, closed loop controls are standard and required in order to provide the accuracy, speed, and repeatability demanded. As the controller hardware evolved, the mills themselves also evolved.
One change has been to enclose the entire mechanism in a large box as a safety measure, often with additional safety interlocks to ensure the operator is far enough from the working piece for safe operation. CNC-like systems are used for any process that can be described as movements and operations. These include laser cuttingweldingfriction stir weldingultrasonic weldingflame and plasma cuttingbendingspinning, hole-punching, pinning, gluing, fabric cutting, sewing, tape and fiber placement, routing, picking and placing, and sawing.
In CNC, a "crash" occurs when the machine moves in such a way that is harmful to the machine, tools, or parts being machined, sometimes resulting in bending or breakage of cutting tools, accessory clamps, vises, and fixtures, or causing damage to the machine itself by bending guide rails, breaking drive screws, or causing structural components to crack or deform under strain.
A mild crash may not damage the machine or tools, but may damage the part being machined so that it must be scrapped. Many CNC tools have no inherent sense of the absolute position of the table or tools when turned on. They must be manually "homed" or "zeroed" to have any reference to work from, and these limits are just for figuring out the location of the part to work with it, and are not really any sort of hard motion limit on the mechanism.
It is often possible to drive the machine outside the physical bounds of its drive mechanism, resulting in a collision with itself or damage to the drive mechanism. Many machines implement control parameters limiting axis motion past a certain limit in addition to physical limit switches.
However, these parameters can often be changed by the operator. Many CNC tools also do not know anything about their working environment. Machines may have load sensing systems on spindle and axis drives, but some do not.
They blindly follow the machining code provided and it is up to an operator to detect if a crash is either occurring or about to occur, and for the operator to manually abort the active process. Machines equipped with load sensors can stop axis or spindle movement in response to an overload condition, but this does not prevent a crash from occurring.
